Saudi Arabia has 306 seismic monitoring stations

Saudi Gazette report

RIYADH — The Saudi Nationwide Seismic and Volcanic Monitoring Community, operated by the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS), has roughly 306 stations unfold all through the Kingdom.

These stations embrace 229 seismographs and 92 floor acceleration sensors, in accordance with SGS assertion. The SGS has roughly 63 units for monitoring crustal deformation, 21 units for monitoring water stream in volcanic areas, and 29 units for monitoring fuel ranges in volcanic areas.

Tariq Aba Al-Khail, spokesman of SGS, mentioned that the seismic monitoring stations in Saudi Arabia are tasked with figuring out places with geological traits, notably these characterised by a weak, skinny crust and quite a few faults. “These stations are additionally positioned in volcanic areas often known as volcanic harrats, along with being positioned in developmental and important websites within the Kingdom to observe any pure or irregular seismic exercise,” he mentioned.

It’s noteworthy that the Saudi Nationwide Seismic and Volcanic Monitoring Community consists of broadband seismic stations, floor acceleration stations, and DGPS/GPS stations for crustal deformation monitoring. This community screens earthquake exercise and potential volcanic hazards throughout the Arabian Peninsula, notably in geologically lively zones just like the western area, and offers knowledge for danger evaluation, constructing code updates, and public schooling on geologic hazards.
